YSL Make-up Haul Autumn 2013 | My Thoughts

A few weeks ago I was strolling through Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar and stopped to check out the Yves Saint Laurent Beauty counter. What caught my eye were the eyeshadow palettes in the Autumn 2013 Collection. A tribute to New York City Street Art, the Pure Chromatics City Drive palettes feature an ultra contemporary graffiti design in either Black or Fuchsia – and they look so god damn pretty!
I decided upon the City Drive Classy Palette
with the black graffiti and gold casing. How beautiful is the
packaging? (see photographs above). It actually makes me squeal with
happiness. This has to be one of the best palettes I have seen in a wee
while, with inspiration for these shadows drawn from marble, concrete and steel architecture.
Such a fabulous quad, featuring a rich brown shimmer, satin champagne,
warm chocolate shimmer and sparkling concrete grey,
shades suitable for
day or night. The palette also contains two double ended applicators (I
always throw these away) and an interior mirror.

This is such a wearable palette, I am typically drawn to neutral colours but this one has a little somethin, somethin’. What I also like about this palette, the eye shadows can be used wet or dry. I haven’t yet tried them wet, other than on the back of my hand, but I am assuming it will just create a more intense look. I had a play around with the colours and swatched them (dry) and you can see the results in the photographs below.

To create this look I used a No7 Blending Brush to apply the warm chocolate (bottom left in palette) along the socket and blended it out above the crease. I then took the concrete grey and applied this to the centre of the lid with a small, flat brush. I blended these two colours together gently with the same blending brush that I used to apply the first colour. Next, I took the satin champagne shade, and applied this to the inner corners of my eyes and blended above the brow bone. To add more depth, I used the final shade, the rich brown shimmer in the outer corners and slightly in the outer crease. I made sure all the colours blended seamlessly. To finish off the look I used a Bourjois Kohl eye pencil in brown along the top and bottom lash line, and in the water line too, ensuring I got right into the lashes, and of course a black mascara.
I would say the look I created is more of a night time look, but with the same colours you could easily create a day look too. If you wanted a more dramatic evening look, don’t forget you could use this palette wet. It is limited edition so get your hands on it before it goes. I am tempted to buy another – I really like it THAT much. You can pick it up for £42.

I also picked up one of their eyebrow pencils, for no particular reason other than I am a bit bored of my current brow products and wanted to test out another brand. What is great about this pencil is the dual end, one side is a precision pencil (durr) and the other side is a brush. I was super impressed with how well the colour just glided onto my brows, effortlessly! For £19, this really isn’t cheap, but if you love a good brow like me then these pencils are totally worth it. Please do not laugh at my pathetic excuse of an eyebrow below… it really is horrendous prior to being defined.

Possibly the longest, fanciest name I have ever come across for a glossy lip stain, but there you go. I first came across these whilst browsing through Lisa Eldridge’s amazeballs blog. She completely sold me into them, so after checking out the eyeshadow palette I decided to try out a few of these lipglosses. I fell in love with so many of the shades, but I decided to go with these two: Coral Aquatique (No7) a stunning peachy coral, and Rouge Goauche (No11) a really pretty red.
I can honestly say I haven’t tried a nicer gloss in a while. I worry about glosses being either too sticky or too drying, I was especially concerned as this gloss is designed to stain the lips, so I thought it might look horrendous after wearing it for longer than an hour. These glossy stains are just beautiful though, so thankyou Lisa Eldridge for drawing them to my attention. The applicator is a cute little heart shape, and helps smooth the gloss on perfectly. It has been designed to get into those hard to reach places, so there is no need for a lip brush, the applicator does all the work for you effortlessly. None of this MAC Dazzleglass glue like gloss texture here folks. As for the packaging, I love how you can see a flash of colour through the “window” like panel. These are a great accessory for a girl’s make-up bag.

These glossy stains really are a revolutionary product and I cannot wait to buy more shades. They go on exactly like a gloss except much smoother, they then as the day goes on start to dry out and leave a beautiful stain. Now my lips, are so so dry, yet these glosses still look beautiful on. The stain is pretty good too, I wore the red one all day and then went to wash my face the same evening and still had bright pink/red lips.
YSL Baby Doll mascara

The very kind lady at the counter popped in a couple of samples of the New Baby Doll Mascara for me along with my other purchases. Now, not to sound ungrateful but I NEVER get excited about YSL mascara. From past experiences, I find they are brilliant for a week, but unless kept in the fridge (who actually does that) they dry up after a month, sometimes even sooner. I find the texture of the formula to change and gradually get more clumpy and difficult to use.
Unfortunately, I ran out of mascara not long after I got given this sample, so I thought I would give YSL another chance. Believe it or not, I was SERIOUSLY impressed with the results. The last mascara to blow me away, was Benefit They’re Real, but since trying this Baby Doll mascara I haven’t touched my Benefit one. I just LOVE it. I still have some left and it still hasn’t dried out or changed in any way. I am definitely planning on buying a full size when my sample stash runs out.

The way the brush has been designed it really opens up your eyes and separates each lash, allowing you to discover lashes that you didn’t see before, hence the Baby Doll effect. They have this mascara in purple too which I think I am going to try out, I have never worn a coloured mascara other than black, so I am excited to see what that will come out like.
