The reason I started this blog was to build myself a platform as a make-up artist. I wanted to get myself out there and in the beginning all I used to share were tips, behind the scenes photographs and before and after photos! My make-up artistry posts are now few and far between unfortunately, and this is something I definitely want to change.
So for those of you who are unaware, as well as working full time as the Head of Make-up Artistry for Crownbrush UK, I still work as a freelance make-up artist. A lot of my work consists of Bridal make-up and in today’s post I wanted to share my tips for those of you who are Brides To Be or if you are a friend of someone getting married, you could point them here for some advice.
So, Brides to Be, where do you start when it comes to working out how you would like your make-up to be on your Big Day?

Pinterest

Pinterest is a great source for finding inspirational make-up looks and I love to sit down with my clients and flick through my Make-up Inspiration boards. There are so many beautiful photographs and ideas on Pinterest, it really does help give you a better  idea of what you would like.

Do It Yourself or Professional?

Decide whether you want to do your own make-up or hire a professional. There are so many YouTube videos out there which can help you to create your own make-up look for your special day, and if you want to do your own but need some professional advice, make-up artists, including myself, may offer a consultation without the full make-over. I offer personal make-up bag consultations and advice for all occasions including weddings.

If you want a professional to do your make-up, I would highly recommend having a trial at least 3 months before the big day. Feel free to bring along a family member or friend. I like to go through images of inspiration and then discuss exactly what look you would like, and every step of the way I will talk you through the make-up look. By the end of the trial, you should feel confident and happy.

Planning the Trial

Whether your trial is by a make-up professional, a make-up lesson or a DIY job, have a practice run through 1-3 months before your wedding day. Some brides like to arrange this so that it falls on the same day as a dress fitting or outing with your bridesmaids. If you are having your hair professionally done also, fitting this around the day of your dress fitting will give you an idea of what you will look like.

Be Confident

At the end of the day, this is your big day, don’t be scared to say you don’t like something or ask for something changing. So, if you are working with a make-up artist or if you are allowing a friend to get you ready, remember, you need to feel confident and comfortable.

The Beauty Products

All make-up artists will have a variety of products in their bridal kits. The key is to ensure your make-up stays on all day long, is camera ready and of course looks great! My favourite products include Laura Mercier Foundation Primers, foundations from Illamasqua, Benefit and Chanel, M.A.C Eyeshadows and Paint Pots and Too Faced bronzers and powders. Waterproof mascaras and eye liners are a must, as are lip liners!  If anyone is interesting in seeing my make-up kit please let me know in the comments below.

I loved this post, and I can not wait to see more of your work. In fact, I am now going back through your archives to hunt down some of your older work now!

  • Great post. Neil and I are thinking about getting married next year and I want to do my own make up. Would be great to see what products you use, especially things like foundations that look good in photos. xx

Ooh I’d love to see your kit, I’m a bridesmaid next year and a bit worried about the makeup as my skins so prone to breakouts!

A kit post would be amazing! As an aspiring make up artist on a budget I struggle to know what are then best buys for my kit!
