So around a fortnight a go I discussed the popular trend of contouring, but the latest craze to take the make-up world by storm is in fact: Strobing. The inner highlighter hoarder in me got a little bit excited about this. I gathered a few of my fail safe illuminators to share with you today. Get ready…

Before I get in to the products I like best, let’s just discuss what strobing is. The idea is to take a highlighter and to apply it, be it powder, liquid or cream, to the highest points of your face. Doing so will mimic where the light would naturally hit your skin, giving you a youthful, brighter complexion. So you are supposed to apply to your brow bone, both above and below the brow, then take it down the centre of your face – particularly the bridge of your nose and cupids bow.
The centre of your forehead is also suggested, but personally I think
this is far too much and can make you look borderline oily. The usual
place for highlighter, across the tops of your cheekbones is also expected from this technique.
When done correctly, this can really make your skin look amazing. I
personally love using cream and liquid highlighters to achieve this
look, and if you want to go all out, apply powder on top of the cream or
liquid product for a super boost of highlight.
Benefit Cosmetics are definitely a favourite for me, especially their highlighters. I have been a long standing fan of High Beam
for so many years, my first one was bought as a teenager and I used to
sit and copy the instructions, dotting the creamy liquid along the top
of my cheek bones. I thought I was so cool. I still use it now and love
to mix it in with foundations to give my skin an all over radiance.
The prettiest rose gold toned highlighter comes in the form of Benefit Girl Meets Pearl, the
applicator is awesome – you just twist and apply directly to your skin
or use a fluffy eyeshadow brush to sweep it across the areas needed. For
those of you who prefer the cooler, champagne toned highlighters then the popular Watts Up
is definitely for you. This has a cream to powder finish which I find
perfect for my skin type. The finish is a really irridescent, soft glow
that… I JUST WANNA RUB ALL OVER MA FACE.
One that is a perfect pairing for fair skin tones like myself is the Clinique Chubby Stick Highlighter, with a fab oil free, long wearing formula that is really quick and easy to apply.
On a budget then Collection Cosmetics Speedy Highlighter is very, very similar to the Clinique Chubby Stick, except it is more champagne than pink toned. You can pick this up for £3.99.
My overall favourite, taking into consideration every element from packaging, to formula and texture, to the name and shade, Nars Violet Atom Illuminating Multiple stick wins hands down. Just look at the swatches below and tell me that violet, pinky ethereal glow is not the colour of dreams? One of the Nars make-up artists told me to apply this underneath foundation so that the glow looks like it comes from within the skin. It works a real treat and I cannot get enough of it.
